6 technologies to keep an eye on in 2024

With predictions about the global economy and the status of megacities unfolding by the minute, we bring you a list of emerging technologies that will come to the fore this year. Each technology mentioned could have been the subject of articles in previous years, but in 2024, they are further from being science fiction than ever before - and closer to amassing interesting market capitalizations. Here are the emerging technologies we'll be learning about in 2024, which could potentially generate new jobs:

  1. Cybersecurity for IoT:

Calling cybersecurity an emerging technology may seem like an exaggeration.

In any case, it has been emerging for years, even more so in the routine of CISOs, who must always be on their toes because there always seems to be a new threat.

Unfortunately, their concerns are justified. For companies, hospitals, governments and anyone else who touches a keyboard, cyberattacks still cost trillions (at least, according to reports) of dollars in damages.

This is why the trend for 2024 is for more robust technologies to be tested and disseminated.

  1. Generative AI:

ChatGPT, Bard and Microsoft Bing - the cutting edge of AI. And after that, there are those useful tools that developers haven't improved enough yet, such as Tabnine. All of them are quite innovative, and mainly designed to generate text, code, images and sound.

That's why they're called generative AI and promise to dominate companies' workflows by 2024.

  1. Flexible batteries:

In this article, flexible batteries appear almost as an honorable mention. That's because not much is known about the technology, but the numbers come to the fore when it comes to market projections.

A study by the World Economic Forum predicts that the global market for flexible batteries will grow by 240 million dollars between 2022 and 2027.

It's good to keep an eye on this issue in 2024.

  1. Carbon capture and storage:

Companies, countries and NGOs are signing up to the highly publicized 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with the aim of tackling the effects of climate change and global warming.

Some companies have taken this very seriously. Like Microsoft and HPE, which are already leading the way when it comes to sustainability.

In addition, the European Union has invested significantly in such technologies as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, including technologies in the area of carbon capture and storage (CCS).

  1. Virtual reality:

What is your dream job? Many millennials and Gen Zs will say: "Any job that allows me to spend my afternoons in a Caribbean paradise."

It's natural that many doubt this perspective and share a very valid response: "You'd only be able to sustain such a job if you could teleport to the beach".

Well, you can with virtual reality.

Projections for the development and improvement of virtual reality in 2024 go beyond entertainment: medicine, culture, education, architecture and productivity will all be impacted - at least, that's the promise of the big techs.

  1. Sustainable computing:

Computing and every task a computer performs still requires energy, and experts estimate that it consumes around 1% of the energy produced in the world.

Other scholars even estimate that it uses 10%. So hang in there: there is real room for improvement in the sustainability of data processing.

DeepMind, for example, has already used AI to reduce energy use by 40% in Google's data centers.

HPE is also a notable example. The company has the priority of sustainable technological development in its DNA, a factor that can be seen in a number of projects that are leading the way in the market.

Because of this, the topic of "sustainable computing" will be much talked about in 2024.

New technologies, new opportunities

These emerging technologies have clear profit horizons, with organizations estimating that they will be markets worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

This, of course, could mean jobs for people who can specialize in making these trends more than 12-month fads.

Software engineers who know how to program with security in mind, cloud engineers or AI engineers will definitely get opportunities with these trends.
